[Updated: July 2026] Figure 1. HIERATIC001 — The Seven Grandfather Teachings. This artwork reimagines the Seven Grandfather Teachings of the Anishinaabe as the ethical foundation of the HIERATIC series, with a flourishing Tree of Life symbolising the interconnectedness of all beings and the seven teachings—Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth—represented as its living branches. The surrounding animals serve as supporting cultural symbolism, acknowledging that their associations may vary among Anishinaabe Nations, Elders and teaching lineages. natural world, the composition emphasises harmony, stewardship, community and reverence for life while respectfully recognising the Indigenous origins of these enduring teachings and their continuing relevance for humanity today. Open published illustration The Seven Grandfather Teachings, originating from the living traditions of the Anishinaabe (including the Ojibwe), offer a timeless ethical compass for living in harmony with ourselves, our communities and the natural world. Although the symbolic animal associations may vary among Nations, Elders and teaching lineages, the teachings themselves remain enduring guides for living a good life. 1. Love Love unites and gives meaning to every other teaching. To see with love is to recognise the sacredness and inherent worth of all life. 2. Respect Honour all beings, human and more-than-human alike. Reciprocity, gratitude and kindness sustain the relationships upon which life depends. 3. Courage (Bravery) Face life's challenges with courage and integrity. Growth often begins where comfort ends. 4. Honesty Be authentic in thought, word and action. Living truthfully begins by being true to yourself. 5. Wisdom Use your knowledge, gifts and experience with care and discernment. Wisdom is knowledge applied for the benefit of all. 6. Humility Recognise that you are part of something greater than yourself. True strength grows through service, gratitude and remembering our place within the web of life. 7. Truth Live the teachings rather than simply speaking them. Truth is revealed through consistent action and lived experience. These teachings continue to resonate because they speak to something deeply human. In an age of distraction, division and uncertainty, they invite us to slow down, reconnect with one another and with the Earth, and cultivate lives rooted in compassion, responsibility and wisdom. Which of the Seven Grandfather Teachings speaks most strongly to you today?

Transparency & Respect This post respectfully shares the Seven Grandfather Teachings as an invitation to learning and reflection. The teachings originate from the living traditions of the Anishinaabe peoples and continue to be preserved and shared by Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. The wording presented here is an interpretive summary intended for educational discussion rather than an authoritative cultural source. Animal associations may differ among communities, and readers interested in a deeper understanding are encouraged to learn directly from Indigenous Elders, educators and community-led resources. Any errors or omissions are entirely my own. With gratitude and respect to the Indigenous knowledge keepers who have safeguarded these teachings across generations. Namaste. This post was inspired by a student's study notes summarising the Seven Grandfather Teachings, which I encountered via CliffsNotes. I then carefully expanded the material into a clearer and more respectful format for discussion and reflection. Primary inspiration: https://www.cliffsnotes.com/study-notes/24961922 The Seven Grandfather Teachings originate from the traditions of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) and remain a living part of Indigenous cultures across Turtle Island. They are not merely historical ideas, but active ethical teachings passed through generations.
