Quantum Memory Matrix
Could spacetime store information? The 2024 Quantum Memory Matrix paper proposes that quantum fields leave imprints in hypothetical spacetime cells. In July 2026, a team tested a related idea on a quantum computer by measuring how often input and output bits matched.
How This Inquiry Began. I first came across the Quantum Memory Matrix through the SciTechDaily article What if the Universe Remembers Everything? New Theory Rewrites the Rules of Physics, shared on r/NeuronsToNirvana on 3 October 2025. That article was my introduction to QMM. The equation analysis below draws on the original research paper.
Research Status · 4 November 2026. Supplementary materials and independent reanalysis are pending. The first check is to reconcile the reported 8,192 shots per circuit with the Figure 2 histogram totals and identify the data used for Table 2.
Could Spacetime Store Quantum Information?
In 2024, Neukart, Brasher and Marx proposed that discrete cells of spacetime could store local quantum information. In their black-hole model, interactions leave quantum imprints in the cells, which could influence outgoing Hawking radiation. The cells and the retrieval mechanism are theoretical proposals. 2024 theory paper
Equation Analysis and Proposed Repairs
Provisional mathematical analysis of the 2024 paper as printed. The proposed repairs are AkashicNET suggestions for specialist review.
- Finite memory cells, Eq. (3). In dimension d, the trace of a commutator vanishes, while the trace of iℏI is iℏd ≠ 0. The canonical relation therefore cannot hold exactly on the whole finite cell. One proposal is to use finite clock and shift operators. Another is to truncate an oscillator and retain its explicit boundary correction. Either choice requires rechecking the derivations that use Eq. (3).
- Excitation transfer, Eqs. (35)–(37). For the stated input, with radiation in the vacuum and memory excited, the printed creation term tries to raise the already excited memory, while the annihilation term acts on the vacuum. Both give zero. Pairing radiation creation with memory lowering and radiation annihilation with memory raising gives H = ℏg(a†σ− + aσ+), where g is the coupling rate. This exchange reproduces the stated two-state oscillation.
- Page-curve continuity, Eqs. (45) and (51). With continuous black-hole entropy, Eq. (45) gives the black hole’s entropy at Page time but tends to zero immediately afterwards. The two branches of Eq. (51) meet continuously and produce the described rise and fall if the black-hole entropy decreases from its initial value to zero. Use Eq. (51) as an explicit toy-model assumption until an entropy curve is derived from the dynamics. The exchange interaction alone does not supply that derivation.
Testable Hypothesis: Coherent State Transfer
In the ideal exchange model, an arbitrary memory qubit α|0⟩ + β|1⟩ transfers to an initially empty radiation mode at t = π/(2g) for g > 0. The memory returns to its ground state and the output is α|0⟩ − iβ|1⟩. The known relative phase can be corrected.
Test basis states and superpositions with two different relative phases. After correcting the predicted phase, compare the output states with the inputs using state tomography. A matched control that deliberately removes phase coherence can still show basis-state agreement, but it should fail the superposition checks. This is a proposed test of the repaired toy model, not a reported result or evidence for Planck-scale storage.
The authors’ intended conventions and corrections remain open. The toy-model prediction is separate from the hardware results below.
What the July 2026 Experiment Measured
Neukart, Marx and Vinokur implemented five QMM-inspired circuits on IBM quantum hardware. They measured how often input and output bits agreed in the computational basis and reported Pearson correlation and mutual information. Bit agreement alone cannot establish recovery of a quantum state’s phase. The authors identify full state tomography as a next step. 2026 hardware paper
Why matching bits leaves an open question. Prepare two qubit states with equal amounts of 0 and 1, but with opposite relative phases. Both give a 50/50 split when measured in the 0/1 basis. Measuring in a different basis can tell them apart, so matching 0/1 statistics alone cannot tell us whether the phase survived.
| Circuit | Retrieval ± 95% CI half-width | Pearson r | Mutual Information (bits) | Figure 2 Count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Three-qubit baseline | 0.732 ± 0.012 | 0.46 | 0.082 | 4,096 |
| 2. Five-qubit dual | 0.704 ± 0.014 | 0.42 | 0.073 | 4,096 |
| 3. Evolution stress | 0.487 ± 0.017 | 0.19 | 0.018 | 1,024 |
| 4. Evolution baseline | 0.705 ± 0.013 | 0.45 | 0.078 | 1,024 |
| 5. Controlled error | 0.684 ± 0.014 | 0.41 | 0.071 | 1,024 |
The methods report 8,192 shots per circuit. The published histogram labels sum to 4,096 for panels a–b and 1,024 for panels c–e. The plotted counts and the data used for Table 2 may represent different selections or processing stages. That relationship remains open.
What the Supplement Could Resolve
- Identify which execution runs, subsets and processing steps produced Figure 2 and Table 2.
- Recover the circuit listings, bit order, run identifiers and raw and mitigated counts, where available.
- Recompute retrieval probability, uncertainty, correlation and mutual information with the supplied analysis conventions.
- Compare the timing, compilation and matched controls for the evolution stress and baseline circuits.
The hardware results address information retrieval in specified circuits. Testing whether Planck-scale spacetime itself stores information would require a separate physical prediction and corresponding evidence.
