QPP in Plain Language
The Quantum Pleasure Principle, associated with Stuart Hameroff, proposes that pleasurable primitive experiences provide feedback encouraging molecular self-organisation. The ambition is to make experience part of the explanation of life’s development, rather than something appearing only after complex organisms exist. [2]
- Experience: objective reduction, as proposed in the Penrose–Hameroff account, accompanies primitive conscious moments.
- Feeling tone: some of those moments are pleasurable.
- Feedback: pleasure influences arrangements that generate further pleasurable events.
- Evolutionary role: that feedback contributes to the organisation from which life develops.
This is the proposed sequence, not a sequence established by the slides. Orch-OR addresses a proposed basis of consciousness; QPP adds a proposed role for pleasure in organisation and evolution. A physical description of a quantum event would not, by itself, demonstrate that it feels good.
Farhan Lakhany’s talk, Evaluating the Quantum Pleasure Principle, appeared in PL-5, Biology of Consciousness, on 13 October. His official abstract identifies three philosophical objections. [1]
DEEPEN · Examine the Bridges
The Three Criticisms
| Challenge | What needs explaining? | Possible reply considered in the talk |
|---|---|---|
| Agency / category mistake | Does molecular pleasure-seeking assign intentions or goal representations to systems that lack them? | Pleasure might supply feedback without intention; alternatively, a minimal definition of agency might apply. |
| Causal efficacy | How does the pleasant quality of an experience influence what the system does? | The feeling itself might be causally effective, without an additional agent intervening. |
| Interaction with values | If Platonic values are nonphysical, how do physical structures interact with them? | Values might be naturalised as particular physical spacetime patterns. |
The photographed slides temporarily grant several premises, including primitive experience, panpsychism and Platonic forms, to ask whether the evolutionary explanation follows even then. Granting a premise for an argument does not confirm it. The slides consider possible responses on Hameroff’s behalf; they are not a transcript of his reply.
Our Assessment of the Argument
The agency objection depends partly on how agency is defined. Rejecting human-style intention in molecules would challenge the human analogy, while leaving a weaker feedback proposal to be assessed. That weaker proposal still needs a mechanism and evidence connecting feeling to behaviour.
Identifying values with vibrations would change the interaction problem: two separate kinds of entity would no longer need to communicate. It would leave an identity question: why is a particular physical pattern pleasure or goodness? A description of resonance needs specified variables and an independently assessable prediction to do explanatory work.
Lakhany concludes that serious difficulties remain. Our narrower assessment is that these objections expose burdens the proposal must meet; they do not establish the impossibility of every quantum account of consciousness.

Where Do Chills Fit?
This inquiry began with a personal question about chills interpreted as kundalini. Such a report can be described without deciding its source: a bodily wave occurs, it may feel pleasant, and it may carry spiritual significance. These descriptions do not establish molecular pleasure, objective reduction or access to Platonic values.
A wave of pleasure or tingling occurs.
A wish to repeat the experience may follow.
A deliberate action may be taken to bring it about.
An involuntary pleasant sensation illustrates the distinction between feeling and intentional pursuit. It is an analogy useful for clarifying the debate, not evidence that molecules behave in the same way.
Alternative Explanations to Compare
- Frisson and reward: a music study measured dopamine release during intense emotional responses including chills. This supports a reward-system contribution in that setting, not a diagnosis of every episode of tingling. [3]
- Body–mind feedback: an exploratory study of 21 participants used cold and vibration along the back to increase reported chills and pleasure during an audiovisual stimulus. The findings are preliminary; the remaining physiological data did not show significant differences. [4]
- Predictive processing: the same research investigates a framework in which bodily signals, expectations and context jointly shape felt emotion. Applied to this personal question, it is a candidate explanation to test, not a demonstrated cause. [4]
- Absorption and self-transcendence: a randomized online study of 398 participants added chills-inducing music to guided meditation and reported increases in self-transcendence and emotional impact. Chills and outcomes were self-reported; those results do not establish a quantum mechanism or show that every spiritually interpreted chill is the same phenomenon. [5]
- Kundalini as spiritual interpretation: this lens explores the significance of the experience within a person’s practice. Its meaning and a physiological account can be considered together, while claims about physical causation require their own evidence.
Working synthesis: emotional significance, absorption and bodily feedback provide plausible avenues for investigating some pleasurable chills. The evidence above cannot determine the cause of the individual experiences discussed here.
AkashicOMNI v0.5.0 · Manual Framework Application
Twelve Perspectives, With Their Limits Visible
This is a manual application of the public perspective descriptions and EXPAND² prompts. It is not an automated AkashicOMNI software assessment or an execution of all constituent frameworks. Read the public method specification.
| Perspective | Disposition | Contribution or limit |
|---|---|---|
| AWAKEN | APPLIED | Notice the sensation, its feeling tone and the interpretation separately. |
| HIERATIC | APPLIED | Kundalini supplies a spiritual interpretation; traditions and individual accounts should not be treated as interchangeable. |
| HOMESENSE | APPLIED | Describe the bodily wave, duration, trigger and everyday context before assigning a mechanism. |
| ADAPT | APPLIED | Ask whether the experience changes later behaviour, rather than assuming pleasantness implies motivation. |
| REGENERATE | NOT_RELEVANT | No repair, therapeutic or flourishing outcome was measured in this conference record. |
| TRANSCEND | APPLIED | Explore reported unity or altered self-boundaries without treating them as proof of a cosmic source. |
| #METAD | APPLIED | Expose the assumptions connecting quantum reduction, experience, pleasure and evolution. |
| ACTC | APPLIED | Check explanatory coherence: each proposed connection needs an account of how it works. |
| CUT · Past | APPLIED | Keep Hameroff’s 2017 proposal distinct from Lakhany’s 2026 critique and the chills studies. |
| CUT · Present | APPLIED | Evaluate the available slides, abstract and accessible research, with missing evidence visible. |
| CUT · Future | APPLIED | Specify tests and revision conditions that could separate competing explanations. |
| UMASC | INSUFFICIENT_INFORMATION | Relationships across matter, awareness, systems and culture are proposed; this record cannot establish the physical bridge. |
AkashicNET provides a source-linked publication and preserves distinctions between evidence and interpretation. AkashicOMNI supplies a structure for comparing assumptions, explanations and revision conditions. Agreement among perspectives is not independent scientific corroboration.
SYNTHESISE · Turn Resonance Into Questions
Questions Worth Taking Forward
- Could pleasure influence self-organisation without intention? What model specifies that influence?
- What observation distinguishes pleasure-driven organisation from the same physical process described without experiential feedback?
- If values are identical to spacetime patterns, what feature identifies a pattern as pleasurable independently of calling it pleasurable?
- Could a chills study discriminate QPP from reward, bodily feedback and expectation accounts? What measurement would be specific to QPP?
- Which result would weaken each proposal, and can it be specified before collecting data?
A Small Next Step for the Chills Question
Record the trigger, sensation, duration, pleasantness and subsequent action separately. Distinguish reported chills from visible goosebumps. Note ordinary context such as temperature, sleep and music. Repeated observations can help refine a question; they do not by themselves identify a quantum mechanism. Any experimental protocol would need suitable controls and ethical review before implementation.
Revision conditions: revise the account of the talk if a complete recording or speaker correction changes the argument. Revise the mechanism assessment if a specified QPP model produces distinctive, replicated predictions. Revise the chills comparison with relevant controlled studies rather than with resemblance alone.
