Thích Quảng Đức · Saigon, 1963
On 11 June 1963, Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức died by self-immolation in Saigon while protesting the South Vietnamese government’s treatment of Buddhists. Contemporary witnesses described him remaining remarkably still and silent. The event became a defining image of the Buddhist crisis and intensified international scrutiny of the Diệm government.
Observed stillness does not prove an absence of pain. His private state of consciousness cannot be reconstructed. The act was fatal and must not be romanticised or imitated.

The reported heart relic
Buddhist custodians and historical accounts report that Thích Quảng Đức’s heart remained after cremation and became a revered relic. This is a historically reported religious tradition. The relic’s identity, condition and survival are not presented here as an independently verified scientific anomaly without forensic evidence.

Nirvāṇa and spiritual interpretation
Some Buddhist devotees interpret his composure and the reported heart relic as signs of exceptional meditation, compassion or bodhisattva resolve. Whether he attained nirvāṇa cannot be established historically or scientifically.
Buddhist nirvāṇa, Hindu moksha and Christian salvation are not interchangeable factual claims. Any comparison belongs to clearly labelled religious interpretation.
