Consciousness, Interfaces & The Nature Of Reality

What if the world we perceive is an interface to a deeper reality? Explore the mathematics, the DMT research proposal and the evidence still needed.

A seated observer faces a translucent aperture revealing a few nodes within a much larger luminous cosmic network. The image reads AkashicTRACE: Consciousness, Interfaces & The Nature Of Reality.

01 · The Proposal

Start With The Observer

TRACE, led by Donald Hoffman, seeks a mathematical account in which conscious observers are primary and spacetime emerges from their interactions. Its programme connects four frameworks. [1]

01

Interface Theory Of Perception

Perception is proposed to guide adaptive action, rather than reproduce the underlying world literally.

Evolutionary models & interpretation
02

Conscious Agent Theory

Experiences and their probabilistic relationships become ingredients in formal models of interacting agents.

Published theoretical framework
03

Trace Logic

Restricting observation to a subset of states produces an effective process on that subset.

Mathematical construction
04

Recursive Trace Logic

Additional levels govern changes to the available state space, not just transitions within it.

Developing framework

Hoffman and Prakash’s 2014 paper introduces conscious agents. The 2023 Fusions of Consciousness develops agent combination and fusion using Markov dynamics. These are theoretical contributions; their interpretation as the foundations of actual experience remains a scientific question. [4] [5]

Does “Fitness Beats Truth” Prove That Reality Is Conscious?

Prakash and colleagues compare specified perceptual strategies using evolutionary game theory and Bayesian decision theory. In their model, choosing directly for expected fitness outperforms a strategy based on first estimating the most probable world state. The result depends on the definitions and assumptions being compared. [6]

AkashicNET assessment: a result about those strategies does not, by itself, establish that all reality consists of consciousness or that altered perception reveals an external world more accurately. Those further claims require additional arguments and tests.

02 · A Concrete Example

What Is A Trace?

A trace records visits to an observed subset while skipping intermediate visits elsewhere. TRACE’s whitepaper describes this construction with Markov kernels: rules assigning probabilities to the next state. It also notes that many different larger processes can produce the same observed trace. [3]

An Illustrative Three-State Cycle

Full Process
ABCA
Only A & C Observed
ACA

B still belongs to the specified full process, but disappears from the restricted record. Each step in the trace counts a return to an observed state; it need not equal one step of the full process.

What this illustrates: partial observation can hide intermediate structure. This simple deterministic example is a special case of a Markov chain, not a model fitted to a brain or DMT experience. It cannot identify what, if anything, lies beyond human perception.

Eight Open Directions In Physics

TRACE lists eight conjectures: special relativity, general relativity, cosmology, Planck-scale spacetime limits, the wavefunction and Born rule, elementary particles, scattering amplitudes and entanglement. They are research targets, not eight experimentally verified consequences. [1]

03 · Theory Meets Experience

The TRACE × Noonautics DMT Programme

The collaboration page describes Andrew Gallimore’s Noonautics team using extended-state N,N-DMT protocols to collect detailed phenomenological observations. Hoffman’s TRACE team proposes to analyse those observations using conscious agent theory and trace logic. The central hypothesis is that some reported encounters could involve normally inaccessible conscious agents. [2]

TRACE lists Traces of the Other by Gallimore, Hoffman and Hermansson as a 2026 preprint. The OSF full text could not be retrieved during this edition’s preparation, so this page reports the institute’s description rather than claiming a full methods appraisal. [7]

Current Assessment

An announced collaboration establishes a programme of investigation. It does not establish independently existing DMT entities. Detailed accounts can characterise experiences; a claim about an external source needs observations that distinguish it from competing explanations.

What Would Change The Assessment?

The following are editorial criteria for evaluating future work, not claims that TRACE has already completed these tests.

Different Claims Need Different Evidence
ClaimUseful Next EvidenceRemaining Limit
The mathematics is validExplicit assumptions, checkable proofs and independent mathematical scrutiny.A theorem alone does not identify its real-world interpretation.
The model describes experienceRegistered quantitative predictions evaluated on new observations against specified alternatives.A good fit can be shared by competing models.
An encounter supplies inaccessible informationConcealed targets, leakage controls, answers locked before disclosure and independent replication.Unexpected accuracy would not uniquely establish an entity as its source.
Known physics emerges from the frameworkDerivations recovering the relevant equations, symmetries, limits and quantitative predictions.Resemblance to a physical structure is weaker than recovering its tested behaviour.

Shared imagery, emotional conviction and a mathematically expressive model can all motivate inquiry. To discriminate between explanations, a study needs an outcome those explanations predict differently. Null findings and failed predictions should be reported alongside positive results.

06 · Institute & Website

A New Institute, An Older Research Programme

The institutional dates should be distinguished from the earlier papers that underpin its programme.

  • 15 May 2026: incorporation in California, according to the institute’s legal footer. [9]
  • 2 June 2026: the institute’s launch press release announces its formation. [10]
  • 3 June 2026: its Noonautics collaboration press release. [11]
  • 13 June 2026: Hoffman and Gallimore’s Los Angeles conversation. [2]
  • January 2027: the full launch described on the donation page, still a future target at this edition’s publication. [12]
Website Snapshot: At Least 23 Public HTML Pages

Our 3 November 2026 navigation review confirmed 11 core and research pages, two event recap pages and ten individual team profiles. PDFs, image files, page anchors and external videos are excluded. The sitemap could not be accessed, so this is a verified minimum rather than an exhaustive site census. [9]

Does TRACE Use ChatGPT Or Another AI?

The homepage advertises semantic search across 20 papers. The public pages reviewed do not identify its provider. We cannot establish whether ChatGPT, another model or a different search implementation is used, nor infer the institute’s internal AI practices from that feature. [13]
