Mycologist Paul Stamets has reported that Frank Herbert connected spice, spores, altered perception and the cerulean blue of Psilocybe mushrooms while discussing the inspirations behind Dune. This is a retrospective account, not a surviving contemporaneous statement from Herbert.
Separately, chemical research attributes the blue bruising of psilocybin-producing mushrooms to injury-triggered enzymatic reactions that form blue quinoid oligomers. The Fremen’s spice-blue eyes remain fictional and are not presented as the same chemistry.
