The connecting lines are symbolic of inquiry; they do not establish a connection between two lives.

The Case

In their August 2021 essay, Akila Weerasekera and Shanaka de Silva describe Esara Bhashitha Kauminda (EBK), born in southern Sri Lanka on 31 January 2002. His family reports that, from around 18 months old, he spoke of Kandy, his “Kandy mother”, people and places, and a death by drowning.

These statements came to be associated with Thilanga Madhushan Ranasinghe (TMR), a young cricketer from Kandy who died in the Mahaweli River on 31 January 2001. The essay received an honourable mention in the Bigelow Institute essay contest; this is not a substitute for independent case verification.

Reported Memories and Historical Records

StrandWhat the Essay ReportsWhat Still Needs Checking
Statements and correspondencesKandy, a “Kandy mother”, named people, two dogs called Jimmy and Chico, cricket and a red shirt. The authors also list unverified details and a vehicle discrepancy.Exact wording, first recording dates, prior exposure, target-search steps and all matches and misses.
Death recordThe reproduced post-mortem summary and coroner’s report identify drowning; the coroner recorded an accidental death. The death record does not establish what EBK said before TMR was identified.
Chest indentationThe authors discuss EBK’s chest indentation alongside a reported injury to TMR.The available post-mortem summary does not locate the lacerations. A precise anatomical match remains unverified.
Fear and behaviourFamily accounts describe childhood fear of water and similarities in interests and habits. When observations were recorded, comparison cases, possible influence and selective reporting.

A Working Timeline

A dated record of the death and a dated record of a child’s statements answer different questions. We have not established which statements, if any, were documented independently before identification. This is an open question, not proof that such records do not exist.

Possible Interpretations

The case may be examined through hypotheses including survival or rebirth, ordinary information access, reconstruction of recollections, selection of apparent matches and coincidence. Some researchers propose anomalous information access without survival; that possibility would itself require evidence and would not alone establish a continuing person. These possibilities need not be equally likely, and the current review does not assign probabilities.

The authors discuss a Buddhist account of rebirth as a causal stream without a fixed self. This is an interpretive framework; the case report cannot by itself establish a metaphysical model.

The authors suggest possible foul play based on discrepancies between accounts. That is their interpretation, not an established finding. The coroner’s report reproduced in the essay records accidental drowning.

What Would Strengthen the Appraisal?

  1. Retrieve earliest reports, interviews and recordings, and independently translate relevant Sinhala material.
  2. Build a dated ledger of exact statements, including partial matches, errors and unverified claims.
  3. Map contact, media exposure, prompts, target search and when information became available.
  4. Assess medical correspondence against independently reviewed records and prespecified comparison criteria.
  5. Separate original case evidence from later retellings, including podcast accounts, while respecting participant privacy.

These are proposed research steps, not checks already completed.
