Does consciousness continue beyond the individual?
The evidence does not currently justify a definitive answer. This page holds two competing models in view, distinguishes experience from inference, and records what would have to change our minds.

Several questions hide inside one.
Does experience occur during cardiac arrest? Can it occur after irreversible loss of brain function? Could consciousness be fundamental while an individual identity still ends? Continuation of consciousness, continuation of memory, and continuation of this person are not interchangeable claims.

Competing model
Brain-dependent consciousness
Individual consciousness is generated by, or wholly realised through, living brain processes. When those processes irreversibly end, the individual stream of experience ends.
What supports it
Established Evidence Anaesthesia, injury, stimulation, disease and sleep reliably alter conscious state and content with changes in brain function.
Established Evidence Measurable organised brain activity can persist or briefly re-emerge during some resuscitation and dying processes.
Interpretation The most economical reading is that reported experiences depend on residual, recovering or reconstructive brain activity.
Counter-inferences
Dependence and correlation do not, by themselves, settle whether the brain produces, constrains or transmits consciousness.
Current measurements are incomplete, especially during rapidly changing physiology and successful resuscitation.
A report that existing models do not yet explain is not automatically evidence for survival—but neither is it explained merely by giving it a neural label.

Continuation / non-local consciousness
The brain may mediate or localise a consciousness that is not wholly produced by it; some aspect of consciousness could therefore continue beyond an individual organism.
What supports it
Lived Experience/Testimony Some people report vivid near-death experiences, perceived separation from the body, encounters, or memories interpreted as continuity.
Established Evidence Such reports exist across populations and can be studied; their existence as reports is not in dispute.
Hypothesis Filter, transmission, idealist and panpsychist models offer ways to interpret consciousness as more fundamental than individual neural activity.
Counter-inferences
No study has established conscious experience after irreversible brain death, or demonstrated a mechanism carrying personal identity beyond it.
Experiences recalled after recovery may have formed before loss of function, during residual activity, or while function returned.
Similarity, sincerity and transformative impact do not establish external accuracy; prospective target tests have not produced decisive replication.
Conservation of energy does not imply conservation of memory, personality or subjective identity.

Cardiac arrest ≠ irreversible brain death
CPR is a reversible physiological interval. Findings during it cannot automatically be extended to permanent death.

Neural signal ≠ reported experience
Gamma power or connectivity can be compatible with conscious processing, but is not a direct readout of a specific experience.

No detected signal ≠ no possible signal
Instrumentation and sampling have limits. Absence of measurement is informative only within a study’s sensitivity and timing.

Anomaly ≠ preferred metaphysics
An unexplained case may challenge a model; it does not select reincarnation, dualism, idealism or any other account by default.

Continuity ≠ personal survival
Even if consciousness were fundamental, the persistence of autobiographical identity would require separate evidence.

A life-changing experience can be psychologically and spiritually meaningful while its causal interpretation remains unsettled.

Buddhist non-self analysis and meditation frameworks examine how the sense of self can be constructed, deconstructed and transformed.
BoundaryContemplative phenomenology, tradition and meditation-related changes in self-processing do not establish external ontology or survival after death.
Interpretation
Physicalism, dualism and panpsychism remain competing philosophical frameworks
These positions offer different accounts of how mind relates to the physical world, but none functions as an empirical verdict on BQ001.
BoundaryPhilosophical coherence or possibility is not empirical evidence that personal consciousness survives death; physicalism as philosophy is not itself proof of non-survival.
