Altered states.
Lasting change?
A striking experience can open a question. What changes in the days, months and relationships that follow?
Three developments connect meditation, awakening and psychedelic meaning. Each asks a different kind of question and carries a different kind of evidence.
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH · HUMAN EEG · PREPRINT
Different patterns after different programmes
What changed: An analysis combines 141 people: 96 in a meditation-experience comparison, 28 completing mindfulness-based stress reduction and 17 completing a trauma-focused programme. A measure of persistence in brain-network dynamics decreased after the healthy-adult programme and increased after the trauma-focused programme.
Average hierarchical depth showed no significant change. Lifetime practice correlated modestly with another dynamics measure (ρ approximately −0.25 to −0.33).
Evidence strength: preliminary
Not peer reviewed. Small intervention groups, different programmes and equipment, and no passive waitlist controls limit causal interpretation. Population and treatment differences cannot be separated cleanly. Preregistration and independent replication were not identified.
The abstract’s “universal” reduction is too broad for the mixed detailed results: the trauma group’s exploratory-breadth trend went in the opposite direction and was not significant after correction. This is not an established EEG signature of awakening or a validated treatment-selection tool.
Why it matters: Similar contemplative labels can conceal different practices, populations and outcomes.
SPIRITUAL INTERPRETATION / THEORETICAL RESEARCH · PREPRINT
A changed relationship to experience
What changed: The proposed enactive-dereification model treats awakening as an enduring reduction in identification with thoughts and experiences, distinct from a temporary altered state.
Why it matters: It offers a research framework for asking whether a reported transformation persists across situations and ordinary daily life.
Evidence status: a model to test
This is a non-systematic synthesis of selected Hindu, Buddhist, phenomenological and neuroscientific sources, not a new clinical experiment. The authors propose testable links between independently assessed lasting changes and neural dynamics. Those predictions require prospective validation.
The 2026 date belongs to this modern paper, not the historical texts it discusses. It is not a new manuscript discovery, translation or demonstration that traditions describe one identical phenomenon. The synthesis does not establish metaphysical truth.
SPIRITUAL INTERPRETATION & PERSONAL TESTIMONY · RECORDED DIALOGUE
When an experience feels like knowledge
What changed: UC Berkeley released a conversation and transcript exploring psychedelic conviction, mystical experience and self-transcendence. Pollan asks how to interpret his powerful impression that plants were conscious.
Why it matters: The discussion brings personal meaning and uncertainty about explanation into the same conversation.
Evidence status: attributable perspectives
The recording documents what the speakers report and think. It supplies no controlled test of plant consciousness or metaphysical reality. Scientific standing does not turn a personal experience into independent verification. This is personal testimony, not channelled testimony or a new empirical result.
AKASHICNET REFLECTION · QUESTIONS, NOT RESEARCH FINDINGS
Bring the insight into ordinary life
The actor/director/witness metaphor offers a reflective bridge: acting in the world, choosing a response, and noticing thoughts without immediately identifying with them. Its resemblance to a research model is a thematic connection, not validation.
For BQ011: interconnection into care
Which changes persist in compassionate action, relationships and service? What would count as meaningful improvement, a null result or an unwanted effect?
For BQ010: reclaiming attention
Can everyday attention improve even when different people show different neural patterns? Measure functioning alongside brain signals.
For BQ002: thoughts and awareness
Does reduced identification with thoughts change how people respond to them? Distinguish that question from where thoughts ultimately originate.
A question for the next study
Can a preregistered design compare matched practices and controls, track longer-term outcomes, and test the proposed model independently?
None of these sources establishes an Akashic field or paranormal mechanism. The Big Questions remain open.
