Two Visions
of the Sacred
Terence McKenna [1999] & María Sabina [1970s]
A reflection after a shamanic rapéh ceremony.
A personal occasion for contemplating these two voices. McKenna explored the language of higher dimensions; Sabina spoke from her Mazatec practice of sacred mushrooms, prayer and healing.

“The psychedelic mind is a higher-dimensional mind.”Terence McKenna · April 1999 · Whole Life Expo, Denver
The excerpt comes from Culture and Ideology Are Not Your Friends. McKenna intended a higher-dimensional interpretation of consciousness. The artwork gives visual form to that philosophical proposition; it is not a measurement of extra dimensions.

“I take Little One Who Springs Forth and I see God.”María Sabina · Testimony recorded by Álvaro Estrada, 1975–1976 · English edition, 1981
The title’s [1970s] dates the testimony. Estrada’s interviews ran from September 1975 to August 1976; this individual statement has no separately verified day or year. The English wording is reproduced by Harvard from María Sabina, Her Life and Chants (1981), page 56.
Sabina’s account places sacred mushrooms within a Mazatec world of relationships, ritual language and healing. Her testimony also describes God appearing as a living Book of Wisdom, emerging from the earth and teaching her what to say.
The mushrooms discussed here are psilocybin-containing Psilocybe. The account belongs to her religious experience and cultural setting. Her Mazatec practice and the rapéh ceremony that prompted this reflection are distinct traditions.

Wonder, With Context
These artworks place two different perspectives beside one another. Their shared interest in extraordinary experience invites reflection; it does not make their explanations identical. The personal ceremony context is first-person reflection, McKenna’s statement is a philosophical proposition, and Sabina’s words are spiritual testimony.
For this reflection, the practical question is what follows an experience of connection: greater care, humility, listening and compassion.
