Reports and selected studies; survival and reincarnation unestablished
Personal continuity after death would be an unusually intimate paradigm shift. It would change questions about loss, identity and the meaning of a lifetime. The challenge is to establish precisely what continues, rather than moving from a striking correspondence straight to a conclusion about a surviving person.

Reincarnation is a stronger claim than a matched memory
Researchers at the University of Virginia analysed 1,678 selected cases in which reported past-life memories had been matched to deceased people. Institutional summaries describe an association between unexpected deaths and shorter reported intervals before rebirth. The study was publicised in August and again in October 2026; the later publicity should not be mistaken for a newly published October study.
This is an observational analysis of selected reports. It cannot itself establish the identity of a continuing consciousness or exclude every influence of selection, transmission and interpretation. UVA explicitly says the researchers have not concluded that reincarnation is real. The full paper was not available for this series, so this account is limited to the institutional summaries and verified citation.

Near death is not the same as after irreversible death
AWARE II prospectively studied awareness during resuscitation. Among 567 in-hospital cardiac arrests, 53 people survived and 28 completed interviews; 11 described memories or perceptions suggestive of consciousness. No one identified the visual target, while one identified the auditory stimulus.
The physiological and experiential findings are important, but CPR may sustain circulation, and remembered experiences are difficult to time precisely. The study does not demonstrate consciousness continuing after irreversible death or independently of brain function. The interviewed survivors also represent a small subset of all arrests.

Mediumship: accuracy and source are separate questions
A study using three levels of blinding reported that sitters selected intended readings more often than chance. It provides a positive result worth examining rather than ignoring. Yet identifying a relatively better reading does not establish that its information came from a deceased person.
Scoring, information leakage, selection and independent replication remain central. Even a well-replicated information anomaly would require further work to distinguish survival from other proposed explanations. The study’s online publication in 2022 and journal issue in 2025 also illustrate why dates should be recorded precisely.

Karma, responsibility and care
Cross-life moral causation is a further claim, not an automatic consequence of reincarnation. Traditions differ, and a single idea of a permanent soul should not be imposed on every account of rebirth.
The Buddhist Sivaka Sutta explicitly rejects reducing all present feelings to past action and lists multiple immediate causes. Here it serves as a primary source for a teaching, not as experimental confirmation. Illness, poverty, bereavement or trauma should never be presented as evidence that someone deserved suffering. Care for the living does not depend on resolving the afterlife question.

The next useful questions
What would change
the assessment?
- Record specific past-life statements before searching for a match; preserve unsuccessful matches.
- Use blinded comparison, predefined scoring and documented routes of ordinary information access.
- In resuscitation research, connect targets and reports to precise physiological timelines.
- Separate accuracy, source attribution and personal identity; preregister independent replications.
Conditional scenario
If it happened
- Verified survival could change the meaning of death without establishing rebirth.
- Verified reincarnation could change identity and inheritance debates, but the consequences would depend on what continuity actually consists of.
- Grief, dignity and consent deserve protection under every competing interpretation.
These implications are editorial scenario analysis. Their scale and direction depend on what is demonstrated, who benefits and how institutions respond.
